2 - The masked journey and arrival in Uruguay

Updated: Dec 31, 2022

Hi Everyone,

Today was a day massively dominated by travel. We woke up on the flight through to Sao Paulo from London, which lander at around 5:30 local time before a 10 hour layover. The whole journey was made significantly more tedious by the requirement to wear a mask for the entire journey from London to Montevideo, including the layover.

However, this was much ameliorated by the fantastic company. We had a great time wandering around the terminal, chatting, and even engaging in some mini table-tennis on the floor of the airport! Another key highlight (debatably) were the pizza creks for lunch. These took the form of rolled up thin pizza similar to a crepe filled with a variety of savoury and sweet fillings, the most unexpected was a “churro” flavour filled with dulce de leche and cinnamon. It tasted fantastic for a couple of mouthfuls but then very quickly became somewhat overwhelming….

Eventually we escaped from the Montevideo airport, having gone through so many rounds of security and spent so long travelling that we were all quite exhausted. Montevideo was certainly worth it though, a fantastic tropical breeze greeted us as we stepped out of the airport into the 25C air. We then drove to the ship into some beautiful low sunlight illuminating the breaking waves as we caught our first glimpse of the ocean. We finally made it to the ship and (after the compulsory group covid tests) were welcomed to the ship with a fantastic buffet dinner and introductions to the friendly crew.

A small group of us also went out to explore Montevideo that evening and apart from some issues getting out of the commercial port (and crucially back in again) we had a lovely evening.
