Our flights out of Chile left in the mid-afternoon from Santiago, so we wanted to make the most of our trip in the morning. We did spend a bit of the morning recovering from the intense last few days but then set off to climb the Cerro San Cristobal (hill of St Christopher) which is the third highest point in Santiago, a beautiful landmark, and very close to our hostel. We made it about halfway around the hill before we realised that if we walked up we would spend all of our time walking up and down in hot weather, and none of it actually enjoying the sights, so we made the brave and intrepid decision to take the cable car the rest of the way.
The hill itself is full of attractions, the highlight being a sanctuary to the Immaculate Conception on the summit, which is a 22m tall statue of the Virgin Mary, with a small chapel within it, lit up from the sides and with a constant soundtrack of Christian music. It was a beautiful sight and the hill also gave great views over the rest of the city. Much of the rest of the hill is a tourist area and public park with an outdoor swimming pool, decorations and even a zoo further down so we made the most of a quick look around before hopping on the cable car and getting back to the hostel for our airport transfer.
This marks the end of our Chile adventures and also the parting of ways as Evelyn got a flight a couple of hours before mine to spend some time in Rio De Janeiro in Brazil, while I boarded my flight back to London.
