Hi Everyone, Welcome to my blog, I'll try to upload semi-regular updates on my experiences, travel and trials as I go through this research cruise. As a brief introduction, I will be undertaking a ~39 day research cruise aboard the RRS Discovery beginning in Montevideo, Uruguay before travelling via South Georgia and some of the subantarctic islands and returning to the Falklands (and then going on a holiday in Chile on the return journey). I don't know yet how often I will update this blog, it will depend vastly on how much happens and I feel you will want to hear about, and also how the internet connections and communication with the outside world hold up. If you are interested in following this blog then I will either update this onto a website or will send it around in email form as well, if you would like to be added to the email list, do let me know at jonros74@bas.ac.uk. So far, we set off from Cambridge on the afternoon of Monday 19th and then flew from Heathrow to Sao Paulo, Brazil overnight. We are planning to fly to Montevideo and board the ship this evening, with beautiful temperatures of 28C and sunny, a good start to an Antarctic cruise. If you would like to track the ship, you can do so on this link: https://noc.ac.uk/science/research-expeditions If you are interested in what the ship is like and the living quarters, why not have a look at the virtual tour, you can see all the labs, social spaces and even the scientist cabins if you navigate around:https://noc.ac.uk/facilities/ships/rrs-discovery/rrs-discovery-virtual-tour For general details on the ship follow this link: https://noc.ac.uk/facilities/ships/rrs-discovery Finally, I'll give more details about the science aims of the cruise as we go and work on things, but if you would like the details, they are available on this link under the current 2022 expeditions, our cruise is DY158: https://noc.ac.uk/science/previous-expeditions I hope you're having a great holiday season and I'll be back in touch soon with more details!
