7 - A Christmas on the Discovery

Updated: Dec 31, 2022

Hi Everyone,

Merry Christmas! I hope you have been able to have a restful holiday with family and friends. Christmas on the Discovery is a truly impressive affair, especially given the fact we are many miles from civilisation. I have attached our schedule to this blog so you can see our fun Christmas activities.

A definite highlight was the Christmas dinner. It must be one of the best I have had, a 4 course meal with all the trimmings, we were all incredibly full. I was particularly impressed by the honey roast parsnips, they were cooked just right, with a soft tender inside and beautifully crisp exterior. The Bailey’s ice cream was also very fun.

We continued the festivities with a secret santa where we played bingo to decided who got which present. To my shame, I was one of the last people to complete my card, evidently I need some more practice, but at least I managed to avoid the really big gifts, which we were very scared of having to transport home. Our Christmas games were completed in the evening with a Christmas quiz, which got very lively and competitive.

During the day, we also found some time for general rest and relaxation. I discovered my new favourite activity on the ship, which was table football during significant swell. The waves today were 3.1m (the largest so far) and this added a whole new dimension to table football as the game really did progress in phases based on the motion of the waves, being both a great equaliser and a fantastic challenge. This did lead to a great debate over the rules, does a goal count if the ball rolls entirely from the entrance to the goal without ever touching a player?

Today was also the first day that we began to be tailed by some albatross and also saw some tentative whales, but I’ll leave those tantalising details (and PHOTOS) for tomorrow!
