Hi Everyone,
Today was nice because we were doing a there and back walk returning to the same tent, so we could leave most of our stuff in the tent laid out rather than worrying about packing everything up.
We set off around 7:20 for a walk up Lago Grey towards the Grey glacier, one of the offshoots from the South Patagonian Ice field. This is the largest ice sheet in the Southern Hemisphere outside Antarctica, and the glacier promised to be very impressive.
Unfortunately, the most up to date forecast showed light rain and relatively strong winds all day, though we hoped to get most of the way to the glacier before it got too bad.
We began with a hike up to laguna los patos (the duck lagoon) though we managed to see zero ducks in this time. We then crested another ridge and were treated to absolutely stunning views of the glacier as the sun rose, and the rain we were expecting was visible near the glacier as a beautiful rainbow. We stopped many times on the way down to the glacier, taking photos and eating snacks, before having lunch on a promontory overlooking the glacier.
We then started walking back as the rain was spotting and wind was picking up so we wanted to get back sooner rather than later and avoid the worst of the rain. As it happens, the rain never got worse and cleared up very quickly. We spent the rest of the walk back in t-shirts with beautiful weather, sunshine and a tailwind, even making it back for 2:45 so this time I could win the bet with Evelyn. As I write this I am sat in beautiful sunshine at a bench in the campsite in bright sunshine, we have been so lucky with the weather all week!!
