52 - Culinary Chaos

Hi Everyone,

Today was the long day, completing the base of the "W" of the W trek. We would be walking about 26km over some fairly rough terrain, and based on the poor forecasts we had seen before leaving, we were expecting to have some strong headwinds and potentially some heavy winds. With all of this in mind we set off around 6am (after some heavy rain and wind had stopped) and began a long day of hiking.

We were incredibly lucky in the end, the weather held all day, with beautiful clear skies, relatively light winds and temperatures that were definitely over 18C, some forecasts we saw later suggested 24-26 in some places. In short, we had a fantastic day surrounded by stunning scenery, fording some small rivers and crossing some on convenient boardwalk. The biggest feature of the day was probably the Cuernos (Horns) which were two huge spires of rock which we could see for most of the trip and even from our campsite! They are made of light granite topped with darker sediments giving an iconic appearance.

We ended up arriving at the campsite just after 2:45 (I know this because Evelyn and I have been entertaining ourselves by betting on various timings of our walks, and this meant I just lost out) and were in high spirits, even though the last hour of the walk began to show the weather closing in, with rain and wind picking up.

We made it to the campsite, were shown to a lovely tent and were assured that our plan for the catamaran and bus on Friday should be fine (which had been causing me some stress). We then proceeded to hide out in the tent until around 6 waiting for the rain to abate. Dinner was sandwiches again, which have formed a major part of our diet on this trip, two meals a day, and so we have been experimenting with unusual varieties. At this point I have tried most combinations of peanut butter, Nutella and Jam, as well as peanut butter and cucumber and Nutella and cheese. Excitingly this refugio had a shop so we could add to our repertoire, sadly it was incredibly expensive so the only thing I could bring myself to buy was a tin of tuna. I then proceeded to eat this with crackers and a plastic knife, which wasn't the most aesthetic thing to watch but did bring me great joy. Tuna has never tasted so good!
