Hi Everyone,
It turns out that we want to show the music video before the end of the cruise so that everyone can see it. As the video editor this has somewhat piled on the pressure as we have two days to edit it all together, so most of my day today was spent grabbing the last few videos and starting to piece them together. While I suspect the video will mostly be of interest to people on the ship, some of the content people have sent in is really amazing and I think it should be really good fun! That said, it is going to take a while….
We also got a fun tour of the engine rooms today! It was incredible to see all the lower areas of the ship and how it works, from the four engines and propellers to the waste and sewage treatment. The highlight for me was to see the anti-rolling sections of the ship.
While the ship does roll quite a lot (I think) when the waves pick up, it actually has two big tanks on either side of the ship and pumps water rapidly between them to reduce the roll by ~30% (apparently). You can actually hear the pumps working and water flowing throughout the ship when the waves are particularly powerful, which is quite cool. It is very impressive to understand how everything is able to work as a single essentially closed system which has to be able to survive months at a time, so there is significant redundancy and backup systems to ensure that even if many seemingly critical systems fail, we can still limp home.
I ended the day with another great jam session with Chris, playing through some of our favourite hits, followed by an amazing quiz created by Sarah, the data manager. All the questions were themed around the ship and our cruise and honestly the amount of effort that went into the quiz was stunning. She spent 3 hours counting every single DVD in our DVD room, for a single question in the multiple hour quiz. For reference, there are over one thousand DVDs and she even checked the number of empty cases. Truly an unbelievable level of commitment that led to a very fun quiz! Sadly, my team didn’t do so well, our guesses and knowledge of the ship’s history was not good…. I personally blame our poor strategic choices of having no ship crew in our team and also a smaller number of team members. Still great fun all round, and we all got a prize anyway, the best kind of quiz!
