42 - Land ahoy!

Hi Everyone,

Today was our first day on dry land for over a month! The pilot arrived around 9am so we arrived in Mare Harbour around 10am (not Stanley, due to scheduling conflicts). However, apart from a couple of very short escapades onshore, we couldn’t leave the ship until the container was ready to ship back to the UK. This involved a very regimented process of loading and signing off every single crate, container and kit bag, as well as clearing out and cleaning all of the labs and rooms on the ship. Thankfully we managed to get this done by around 3pm.

We wanted to make the most of our time onshore by walking to a nearby beach called “Bertha’s Beach” but unfortunately there was bird flu there so we were not allowed to go there. We were also offered tours of the Sir David Attenborough (SDA) at 7pm so people wanted to be back for that. In the end we went for a stroll towards the beach but staying up away from the beach until we reached another where some people went away and others of us went for a quick swim! We all made it into the water, and while most people got out quickly, Laura and I ended up staying in for 40 minutes and missing the SDA tour entirely because we were enjoying it so much.

Laura and I eventually made it back to the harbour around 8pm and eventually made it onto the SDA (after making myself a sausage sandwich and dropping our bags). The two crews were having a great party on the SDA and it was great to catch up with friends and colleagues from around BAS, including Kate Hendry from Polar Oceans, who is co-PSO on their cruise. The SDA bar is unfortunately somewhat superior to the Discovery’s. While both are limited to two drinks, on the Discovery those are quite small 330ml with a limited selection, while on the SDA full pints were available with much more exciting options. This, combined with new people and a great environment, led to a very pleasant evening all round.
