Hi Everyone,
We are now moving north back towards the Falklands and dry land. Even though we completed our circuit of the iceberg by around 11pm last night, when we woke up this morning A76a was actually still visible on the horizon, appearing like a huge set of cliffs or the edge of a continent. Very foreboding and impressive and if we didn’t know what it was I would definitely have believed it was land. Sadly, I must confess that it is apparently not the biggest iceberg in the world, apparently that honour is held by a different iceberg (although it may have become grounded in the Weddell sea, which I would argue makes it now an ice sheet again and so not an iceberg……).
The rest of the day was taken up by two main pursuits: wrapping up the science of the cruise, and preparing the music video. For the science, we are all writing up brief cruise reports to summarise the instruments we have been working on during the cruise and enable others to understand and replicate our work in future. We have also been clearing out labs, and in my case also doing a solid three and a half hours of salinometry (the last runs!).
The music video is coming along well. We haven’t started the editing yet but we have a good set of videos and collected many more today. I think my favourite part of the video so far is our attempt to write the name of the ship on the front deck with our bodies, which actually worked really well and looks fantastic, thanks to the amazing photoshop skills of Povl. I also managed to fit in a really nice call to Katie-Lou who is currently living it up at a conference in San Francisco. We finished the day with a viewing of “Hot Rod” which has to be seen to be believed, it is an Andy Samberg comedy and can be accurately described by the quote from it: “Life is Pain”. (We actually all had a great time, Sarah in particular found it hilarious!)
