38 - The biggest iceberg in the world!?!

Hi Everyone,

Today was incredibly exciting! We got to see the biggest iceberg in the world (debatably… more on that later). When I woke we had already reached the iceberg and it was only a few hundred metres away, looming over us as it was about 30m out of the water (which is even more impressive when you remember that most of an iceberg is under the water).

For those of you trying to get some sense of the scale of this iceberg, it is far far bigger than most icebergs you might have seen which are tens or hundreds of metres across. This iceberg is about 135km long approximately the size of South Georgia or twice the size of Greater London. From close up it just looks like a huge cliff made of ice projecting out of the water, like the great wall in the Games of Thrones series. Sadly, once I saw it (about 5 mins after coming up on deck) it started to recede into the fog. It has been very foggy today, apparently there is a decent northerly wind providing lovely warm temperatures (air temp is a balmy 5 degrees) but also leading to a lot of fog.

Although the fog persisted for much of the day, by the mid-afternoon it had receded to the point where we could see the iceberg again and a number of us went up onto the front deck to take photos, admire the scenery and spot wildlife. Some of us were lucky enough to spot a large piece of the ice calving off into the water (coincidentally just after Chris tried to manifest it happening……). We also spent some time on the back deck as this got us closer to the abundant wildlife, with cape petrels, black-browed albatross and many prions all flying around us and the iceberg. It was actually some of the busiest wildlife we have seen, I was so engrossed I nearly got consumed by a freak wave (leading to a very good photo!).

It is Burns night and so we had the address to a haggis as well as some very nice M&S vegetarian haggis (nothing but the best on this cruise!). Everyone then went on deck to get the cruise photo in front of the iceberg. We sneakily usurped this to get some more content for the music video by getting everyone to have a dance party on the front of the ship with our chosen song. This led to great hilarity and some phenomenal content which will definitely be featuring. Finally, the “children” of the group went to the bar after work and played some rounds of twister. We don’t actually have the original set, but apparently a previous group got so desperate to play that they crafted one out of an old sheet and some different coloured tape. It was very good fun but also incredibly painful, even if most of the moves were not that bad…
