29 - The Thing!

Hi Everyone,

I hope you’re doing well, thanks to everyone who has been sending me messages of support and asking after me. The messages are much appreciated, apologies if I haven’t responded back yet, I struggle with some of these due to the internet. The most reliable ways to get in touch are whatsapp and email, facebook is very unreliable.

The day didn’t get off to the best start. I really struggled with the new room and was woken up about 5 times in the night by people walking around, working, and at one point the alarm for one of the watertight doors was going off for about 3 minutes (which is quite a loud alarm, usually caused by someone not leaving it in the correct position). This meant despite being in bed for quite a while, I was not very well rested and the fact that the socket I had chosen for my phone did not work was not helping.

Nonetheless, it was quite a quiet day workwise as there were no CTDs (or salts as the salinometer was still broken) and so it was mostly spent in meetings to prepare for the next section, as well as emails, and some games of cards.

The highlight of the day (by far) was “The Thing”. This is a 1982 horror film set in an Antarctic research station when an alien intruder appears. With a plot very much like that of “Among Us” it was very fun, and the special effects definitely added a lot to the enjoyment. As it was so popular we had to move the viewing to the main lab, with almost every flat surface covered in excited viewers, all the lights turned down and the customary snacks and popcorn in generous supply. We were all on the edge of our seats right until the end. This was then followed up by “Thingu”, which is honestly phenomenal.

It is a fan-made Pingu version of The Thing which somehow manages to fit an almost 2 hour plot into 2 minutes while keeping almost all the main features of the plot and adding some adorable penguins. I may have to arrange a screening once I return to the UK.
