Hi Everyone,
Today didn’t go entirely as planned. Our plan for the day was to finish the A23 section and then move south, with Chris having covered the salinometry overnight, with me taking over for some extra salts later. I woke to a message from Chris saying “So I don’t think you’ll have any salts to run on your shift … “. Something had gone wrong with the salinometer overnight and we had to pause our salinometry for a while. Thankfully we have a second salinometer but, as machines often have small inconsistencies between them or give different readings with different standardisations, it is ideal to use the same machine as much as possible. With this in mind, we will try to fix the first machine before trying the second, thus a delay in the salinometry for a bit.
We also had an issue with our cabins. Chris and I share a small corridor and bathroom between our cabins and a leak had appeared in the floor between our cabins that was seeping up water. Sadly, as the source and cause of the leak was unknown, we were asked to move from our nice, quiet, waterfront cabins to two in the middle of the ship which had no windows and were significantly noisier. This was a bit of a shame, but we coped, and rapidly moved the essentials across (although the bulk of our belongings still remain in the other cabins).
Despite all of this, we did manage to finish the A23 section, take all the CTDS and begin sailing towards our next area (the M2 and M3 moorings in the Weddell sea) before the end of the day. As we move around the Weddell sea we are hoping to see a bit more ice and maybe even some cool wildlife, we’ll see!
