Hi Everyone,
Today was the day we stopped running away from the storm and reached our furthest point south. I was very excited about the furthest point so I woke up at 6:30am (middle of my sleep period) to observe it. I woke up, felt exhausted, looked out of the window, took some pictures and then went back to sleep!
Our attempt to escape the weather seems to have worked as the wind and waves have been very chill, not over 3m, and we are now able to start work again (with our first CTD since turning coming up this morning). Hopefully this weather will continue and we will have a calm and productive few days.
The afternoon was exciting as we got to do our deepest CTD of the whole trip which was 4878m (much deeper than the average depth of the ocean, around 3688m). This should hopefully allow us to sample some of the deepest waters in the ocean, such as Antarctic Bottom Water, which are critical for long term heat and carbon storage. The pressure at this depth is also intense, around 500 atmospheres (500 times stronger than atmospheric pressure), so the instruments and machinery deployed to these depths need to be incredibly strong and resilient.
Finally, we ended the day with some relaxing card games including snap and a Czech version of Rummikub which translates as “Jokers”. It took us a while to get our heads around both of these games but we pretty much all agreed on the rules by the end! (who knew that snap was so difficult!)
